ii) Kathy´s character and her narrative - what are her particular interests

Never Let Me Go - Chapter 3 - Questions - Homework for Tuesday 27th January




1)Analyse the scene/ conversation between Tommy and Kathy – in what ways is this a crucial
scene? What do we find out from this scene? Use quotes to support your ideas and ensure that
you analyse them.

2)What are first impressions of Miss Lucy? Use quotes to support your ideas. Analyse in detail.

3)Why do you think Madame comes and takes away their best pictures? (mentioned on p.30)

4)What do you think of Madame? Find and analyse 3 important quotes.

Also, read chapter 4 for Tuesday. Be ready for a comprehension test that will check you´ve
actually read it.

Never Let Me Go: Chapters 1 and 2



Chapter 1

1) Explain in detail the meaning of the following words in the context of Never Let Me Go:
a) to complete
b) a carer
c) a donor
d) recovery centre

What is the effect of this type of language? What does it suggest about the world created in the novel?

2)Consider the words used to describe various states of the donors – ‘agitated’ and ‘calm’. What do these suggest about the donor process?

3) Kathy H says that Hailsham often gets people´s backs up, and that the pupils from Hailsham are ´priveleged´. What does this suggest about Hailsham?

4) What impression do you get about the following characters: Kathy K, Tommy and Ruth? Write a minimum of 80 words on each character using at least one quote to support your ideas.

5) What sort of narration does Ishiguro use in the novel? Do you find it effective?
